Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
Kandy is one of the most famous cities in the Island Paradise that is Sri Lanka. The city of Kandy is truly a modern city with roots bound with history. Kandy was the Capital of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) during the period of 16th to 18th century. Legend says the first King of Kandy Kingdom was Wimaladharmasuriya I and the last Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe.
The Kandy Kingdom was considered to be one of the safest locations in Sri Lanka and was impenetrable for even the Portuguese and the Dutch. But why is Kandy so special? Apart from its rich history Kandy has been the location where the ‘Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic’ is situated. It is indeed the most prestigious Religious icon in Sri Lanka. People worship the Sacred Tooth Relic daily & special rituals are carried out which dates back to the 16th century.
The famous Kandy Perahera which is held during August is linked to the Temple of Tooth Relic. The casket which is used to secure the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, is used as the centerpiece of the Kandy Perahera as it is mounted on a majestic elephant and toured around the city. The Temple or Maligawa comprises of many sections. Aluth Maligawa (New Temple) is a new and larger shrine hall with dozens of sitting Buddhas donated by devotees.
